Do I play tennis to feel in control?
In the book Rafa, there is a line that mentions Rafael Nadal is a man who needs to be in control of anything, but since that's impossible, he invests all he has in controlling the one part of his life over which he has the most command: tennis.
Boy, does this hit home. I hate not being in control, and in a way, it's where most of my fear and anxiety come from.
Flying.
Watching helplessly as the barista makes my coffee wrong.
Business deals with risk.
Control.
Tennis doesn't necessarily keep me in control because we are not really in control of anything, and I know that. It's not so much that I play tennis to be in control, but rather because it keeps life simple, and I love it.
Simplicity is the combat to control. When things are falling apart in a tennis match, and you are starting to crumble, the best advice one can give is to simply put the ball over the net.
Trust God. Keep life simple. Focus on what you love.
That's the best way to deal with control.
